Orange Field Hockey Wins Home Opener, 3-1

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Lafayette, 3-1, today in its home opener at Coyne Field. SU moves to 3-2 with its second consecutive victory. The Leopards fall to 0-3.
The Orange scored the game’s first three goals. The first at the 17:01 mark when senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) was able to onetime a shot into the cage off a pass from the deep right corner by senior forward Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa.).
Stuart was at the receiving end of SU’s second goal at the 40:28 mark. Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) got a stick on a loose ball in front of the Leopards’ cage and passed it to Stuart who tallied her second goal of the young season.
Senior back Jess Wreski’s (Middletown, Pa.) dream came true when she scored the first goal of her four-year career off a penalty stroke with just over eight minutes remaining.
Lafayette’s Laura Fabian scored with two minutes left.
SU outshot Lafayette, 17-9, and held a 10-6 edge on penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Marie O’Brien (Burlington, Ontario) made five saves while earning her first career victory for the Orange. Jill Lambert finished with an eight saves for the Leopards.
“Marie has been working really hard and is playing better than I have ever seen her play. She deserved the chance and I gave it to her,” head coach Kathleen Parker said.
The Orange opens BIG EAST play at Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
